The junction has been filled in for safety, but there really should have been a cycle bypass for NCN route 2

In 1896 a closed-off Cycling Boulevard opened in Bexhill

The seafront at Bexhill was the scene of the first British motor races - but it was also important for cycling.

NCN route 2 remains on the road, although there seems to be plenty of space on the promenade

Start of track for horses - but cyclists on NCN route 2 have to stay on the main road.

The tedious and hilly on-road section of NCN route 2 between Winchelsea and Hastings. There really should be a coastal route through the country park to the left.

NCN route 2 stays on the road rather than the seawall here. The enjoyable, largely traffic-free, cycle route from Whitstable, via Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Sandwich, Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Hythe, Dungeness and Rye, has come crashing ... [more]

Drivers beware - cyclists on NCN route 2 turning right off the A259 here

NCN route 2 towards Rye turns left onto the A259 - turn left in 200m to go via the village of Winchelsea.

NCN route 2 is briefly on the A259 to bypass Winchelsea (why?), but this sign does of course make drivers much more careful.

NCN route 2 turns left onto the A259, avoiding Winchelsea - but if you want to see the village you should go straight on (ie turn right) and then left.

NCN route 2 (from Winchelsea to Rye) turns left into the car park. The route ahead turns into a footpath but oddly there seems to be a Sustrans 'milepost' there.

Route sign telling cyclists to stay on the road and turn right at the roundabout - although there's an obvious off-road option.

NCN route 2 turns left at the roundabout. It would be easy to take it off-road, but the local dog-walkers might object.

Sign for NCN route 2 on the road east from Rye. The route north would be a useful link too, either in the park or alongside.

NCN route 2 joins the road here - but the route to the left would be far better.

NCN route 2 follows the coast road rather than the seawall, for some reason

Obvious route for NCN route 2 to Camber

The obvious route for NCN route 2 would be to leave the seawall here to follow the off-road route to Lydd

NCN route 2 crosses the road then supposedly follows it to Camber rather than the obvious route on the seawall
